A dingo, a snake and a tawny frogmouth were all part of the celebrations at the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s inaugural NAIDOC Week event this week.
About 100 people packed out the Serpentine Jarrahdale Recreation Centre on Tuesday morning to take part in the activities, which included arts and crafts, a library display, animal display, rugby sessions and traditional Aboriginal dance activities.
Shire president Michelle Rich said NAIDOC Week was an important occasion for everyone to come together and celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“The traditional dance activities from the Maar Koojdal Aboriginal Corporation was so very popular with attendees and it helped raise awareness with our local community about Aboriginal culture and history,” she said.
“This was the shire’s inaugural NAIDOC Week event however we are keen to ensure that it becomes an annual event.”
